IELTS Examination Overview

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a globally recognized assessment designed to evaluate English language proficiency among non-native speakers. Accepted by numerous educational institutions, employers, and immigration authorities worldwide, IELTS serves as a critical benchmark for individuals aiming to study, work, or migrate to English-speaking countries.

Test Structure

IELTS evaluates four key language skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The total duration of the test is approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes. There are two test formats available:

  • IELTS Academic: Intended for those pursuing higher education or professional registration.

  • IELTS General Training: Suited for individuals seeking work experience, training programs, or immigration purposes.

Section Breakdown

  1. Listening: This section lasts for 30 minutes and comprises four recordings of native English speakers, followed by questions that assess the candidate’s ability to understand main ideas and detailed factual information.

  2. Reading: Spanning 60 minutes, the Reading section includes 40 questions designed to test a range of reading skills, including reading for gist, reading for main ideas, reading for detail, skimming, understanding logical argument, and recognizing writers’ opinions, attitudes, and purpose.

  3. Writing: Also 60 minutes in duration, the Writing section requires candidates to complete two tasks. Task 1 involves describing visual information (e.g., a graph, table, chart, or diagram) in their own words, while Task 2 requires responding to a point of view, argument, or problem.

  4. Speaking: This section is a face-to-face interview lasting 11–14 minutes, designed to assess spoken English skills. It consists of three parts: an introduction and interview, a long turn where the candidate speaks on a given topic, and a two-way discussion thematically linked to the individual long turn.

Scoring System

IELTS results are reported on a 9-band scale, ranging from Band 1 (Non-User) to Band 9 (Expert User). Each section receives an individual band score, and the average of these four scores constitutes the Overall Band Score.
