UKVI Examination Overview
The IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) is a Secure English Language Test (SELT) specifically designed for individuals who need to prove their English language proficiency for UK visa applications. Approved by the UK government, this test evaluates your skills in Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking and is essential for work, study, or migration purposes in the United Kingdom.
Test Structure
The UKVI exam is conducted in a format similar to the standard IELTS test but is tailored to meet the UK Home Office’s specific requirements. The test duration is approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes and is available in two formats:
- IELTS Academic for UKVI: For those applying to higher education institutions or professional organizations in the UK.
- IELTS General Training for UKVI: For individuals migrating to the UK for work or training programs.
In addition, candidates applying for family visas, indefinite leave to remain, or British citizenship may need to take the IELTS Life Skills test, which evaluates Listening and Speaking skills only.
Section Breakdown
1. Listening
- Duration: 30 minutes
- Includes four recordings of native English speakers, followed by questions to test understanding of main ideas, detailed information, and opinions.
2. Reading
- Duration: 60 minutes
- Comprises 40 questions assessing comprehension of written texts, including skimming, scanning, understanding arguments, and identifying the writer’s perspective.
3. Writing
- Duration: 60 minutes
- Includes two tasks:
- Task 1: Write a summary based on visual data (Academic) or respond to a situation (General Training).
- Task 2: Write an essay responding to a problem, argument, or viewpoint.
4. Speaking
- Duration: 11–14 minutes
- Conducted as a face-to-face interview, this section assesses spoken English skills through an introduction, a long turn, and a two-way discussion.
Scoring System
The UKVI exam follows the same scoring system as standard IELTS, using a 9-band scale:
- Band 1: Non-user
- Band 5: Modest user
- Band 9: Expert user
Candidates receive individual band scores for each skill, along with an overall band score. Specific visa types may have minimum score requirements, so it is crucial to verify the necessary scores for your application.
